Khardomah Lodge's History to becoming a Registered Site in the State of Michigan

Michigan has Registered Khardomah Lodge as a Historical Site.

Khardomah Lodge

In 1873 lumberman James Brayton built a cottage here, which he and his wife named "Khardomah Lodge." Susan Hill Yerkes bought the property in 1919, adding thirteen rooms and converting the cottage to a summer hotel, thus beginning Khardomah's history as a part of Grand Haven's tourism industry. From 1938 to 1984, the Lodge was owned by Jennie Smith and her daughter Helen Unger. Families from as far away as St. Louis and Little Rock returned to Khardomah each summer.

Current owners, Mo Rave and Patty Rasmussen-Rave purchased the Lodge in 1996. Already fans of the Lodge, they found the location perfect and the community of Grand Haven friendly.

A point to preserve the Lodge's original feel has been maintained and in 1990 the Lodge received a State Historic Marker dedicating Khardomah as "a rare reminder of the days of horse-drawn trolleys and days spent without the intrusion of cell phones, TV's and computers!"

Soon realizing the adventure would require their attention full time, they found a manager for Khardomah in Gayle Gerig. Gayle recently retired to go back to her art and has passed the lodge keys on to Sally and Jack DeMarr.

Their experience in the food, beverage and customer service area will continue to carry on the tradition of "Welcoming guests to the Lakeshore".
